Runner-up

If our top pick sells out, the Braun Silk-epil 7 is a solid second choice.

We love that it’s 100% waterproof, with a sleek ergonomic design that works perfectly in the bath or shower.

The first thing that you’ll notice about the Silk-epil 7 is that the epilation head is slightly smaller than the Silk-epil 9.

Apart from the wider epilation head, you’ll find that the features on both the Silk-epil 7 and 9 are surprisingly similar.

So, if you are looking for a great epilator at a cheaper price, the Braun Silk-epil 7 is an excellent choice.

Budget pick

The Philips HP6401 Satinelle epilator is an excellent choice for our budget conscious beauties or beginners who are new to epilating.

The Philips Satinelle is a dry epilator and efficiently removes hair from the root without breakage. This epilator has two speeds and is suitable for use on legs and underarms.

Being a dry only epilator we like that it comes with a long cord and that the head can be removed so that it can be washed under water for easy cleaning.

This budget epilator is hard to beat, delivering excellent results at an affordable price.

How to choose the right epilator

Using an epilator is a convenient way to remove hair, but picking the right one can seem like a daunting task.

When choosing an epilator, there are a few things you should think about…

For example, how many tweezers does it have? Can it be used wet or dry?

Does it come with any accessories? What areas of the body can it be used on?

So, let’s dive right in and look at the most important things to consider when choosing an epilator.

Choose a well-known brand

You can easily find an inexpensive epilator at a drugstore, but the quality of these often result in slower and more painful hair removal. These cheaper options are also more likely to break down a lot faster.

So, make sure you choose an epilator from a recognized brand. It might be a little bit more expensive upfront, but it’ll be worth it when your epilator lasts for years to come.

Number of tweezers

Now, let’s consider the actual features of the epilator.

How many tweezers does it have?

Cheaper epilators normally have around 20 tweezers while more expensive models will have at least 40 or more.

There is even one epilator on our list that has a massive 72 tweezers!

So why does this matter?

Epilators with fewer tweezers will take longer to remove the hair, especially when you’re dealing with larger areas like arms or legs.

So if you’re looking for an epilator to speed up your beauty routine, I recommend going for a model with at least 40 tweezers.

So at this stage you might be thinking that the best epilator is the one with the most tweezers.

And you might just be right…

However, there are still a few things I want you to think about before you make your final decision.

What areas do you want to epilate?

Now, what areas are you going to use it on? Yes, believe it or not, that’s something that should be taken into consideration before choosing an epilator.

If you only want to epilate your legs, you can save a few dollars and choose an epilator that doesn’t come with any extra attachments.

But, if you plan on removing hair from multiple areas including your legs, body and face, make sure to choose an epilator that comes with the right attachments for the job.

Cord or Cordless?

Best epilator reviews. Close up of woman epilating her legs with an epilator.
Cordless epilators have become increasingly popular over corded epilators, but which one is better?

One of the advantages of a using a cordless epilator is that you can epilate anywhere you choose, without having to worry about finding the nearest outlet. One of the downsides of going cordless however is that the battery might die before you’ve finished epilating.

After a full charge, most cordless models will last around 30-40 minutes. For me, this is more than enough time to epilate my legs and underarms, but if you think you’ll need longer you might want to consider a corded model.

Waterproof?

If you’re worried about epilator pain, you might want to consider getting an epilator can that be used in the bath or shower. The warm water will help to relax your skin, making hair removal less painful.

Epilating in the wet isn’t as precise as epilating on dry skin, but it’s definitely one of the best ways of reducing epilator pain, especially for beginners.

Accessories

The best, most cost-effective epilators come with a few extra attachments for removing hair on different areas of the body.

For example, a sensitive cap is recommended for more delicate areas as it blocks off a larger section of the epilator head, and helps to prevent skin pinching.

Some epilators also come with a shaver attachment which is great for those times when you don’t have time to epilate or just need a quick touch up before heading out the door.

Other models come with exfoliation brushes and one even comes with a pedicure buffer, so make sure to consider all the options before choosing the right model for you.

Does it hurt?

If the thought of pain makes you squeamish, don’t worry!

It’ll take a little getting used to, but with regular practice, you’ll find that the process goes much smoother and causes minimal pain.

Advantages of epilating

Epilator pain. Women lying next to epilator on white background.Truly, the advantages of epilation cannot be understated. One of the best things about using an epilator is that, since the hair is being plucked from the root, it takes longer for the hair to grow back.

So instead of shaving every day or every other day, you’ll be hair-free for a week or two, depending on the speed of your hair growth. With regular use, the hair may also begin to grow in finer and softer, so you won’t have to epilate as often. Plus, you won’t need to spend money on expensive razors and shaving cream.

At the end of the day, epilation is too convenient not to try!

How to use an epilator

If you’re new to using epilators, don’t worry; with just a few tips, you’ll learn quickly.

First, take a bath and exfoliate beforehand. This will help to remove any dead skin and open up your pores, making it easier to pluck the hair fully from the root, rather than simply breaking it. Second, choose a lesser-sensitive area to begin with and pull the skin taut with your free hand.

Once you’re ready to begin, use the epilator in the opposite direction of the hair growth.

Make sure to go slow, and take a break if you need to.

The best epilator – Braun Silk-epil 9

The Braun Silk-epil 9 is our favorite because it is superbly fast, removes hair efficiently and adapts easily to the contours of the body.

We love its sleek, easy to hold design that is perfect for use in both wet and dry conditions.

The wider epilation head is perfect for using on larger areas such as legs and arms, making it the fastest and most precise Braun epilator on the market.

Braun has a reputation for leading the way when it comes to the performance and features that they pack into their epilators. And their newest addition to the lineup, the Silk-epil 9 series, does not disappoint and shows considerable improvements to the Silk-epil 7 range.

The first thing you notice about the Braun Silk-epil 9 is that is has a 40% wider epilation head than the Silk-epil 7, making it the fastest Braun epilator on the market. The Silk-epil 9 has 40 Micro-Grip tweezers, which are wider, longer and deeper than the Silk-epil 7, meaning that it can remove more hair in a single pass, which means you are less likely to have to go over the same area twice. Short hair isn’t a problem with the Silk-epil 9, as it is able to remove hairs as short as 0.5mm.

The Braun Silk-epil 9 is suitable for use on all areas of the body including legs, arms, underarms, bikini area and face.  It comes with 7 attachments in total including a shaver head, trimmer cap, high-frequency massage cap, facial cap, charging stand and a facial cleansing brush.

One of my favorite features of the Silk-epil 9 is the massage roller cap. Combine that with the pulsating vibrations created by the epilator, it helps to provide a more enjoyable epilation experience. As you continue to epilate regularly you will find that your treatments will become virtually painless.

Braun Silk-epil 7 – A Reliable Performer

A reliable performer – Braun Silk-epil 7

If our top pick is out of stock, we think that the Braun Silk-epil 7 is a solid second choice.

We like that it’s completely waterproof, with a stunning cordless design that is perfect for the bath or shower.

At first glance, the biggest difference between the Silk-epil 9 and the Silk-epil 7 is the size of the epilation head. However, if speed is not your main concern, you’ll find that the Silk-epil 7 has many of the same features as the Silk-epil 9, at a more affordable price point.

This machine is perfect for beginners and experienced epilators alike. It comes with 40 micro grip tweezers that can remove hairs as short as 0.5mm, leaving you with soft, beautiful skin for up to 4 weeks.

One of the most popular features of the Silk-epil series is the unique massage rollers that help to calm and relax your skin during epilation. The pivoting head makes this machine really easy to maneuver and helps to maintain skin contact at all times.

Another handy feature is the built-in light, which helps you to find every last hair.

The Braun Silk-epil 7 is suitable for use on all areas of the body including legs, underarms, bikini area and face. It comes with 6 attachments including a shaver head, trimmer cap, high-frequency massage cap, sensitive area cap, facial cap and an efficiency cap.

The epilator comes with two-speed settings. If you’re a beginner it’s best to start on the lower setting. Once you’re feeling more confident you can move up to the faster setting. Generally the faster setting is better for larger areas like legs and arms and the lower setting is recommended for more delicate areas like the bikini area and face.

Overall, the Braun Silk-epil 7 is a great epilator for anyone looking for a quality epilator, at a more affordable price.

Philips HP6401 Satinelle – A Less Expensive Option

A less expensive option – Philips HP6401 Satinelle

For beginner epilators or folks on a budget, we recommend the Philips HP6401 Satinelle as a decent, no frills epilator.

The Philips Satinelle is a simple, entry-level epilator that removes hair cleanly from the root without breakage. This model is suitable for use on clean, dry skin and can be used on legs, arms and underarms.

The Satinelle is a corded device, which means that it has to be plugged into an outlet in order for it to work. One advantage of having a powered epilator is that you never have to worry about the battery going flat. The extra long cord is a great feature and means that you don’t feel restricted when using it.

The epilator’s curved body is comfortable to hold and its small size makes it great for travel. Philips claims that it can remove hair as short as 0.5mm, however in my experience it works best if the hairs are a little bit longer.

This model has 21 hypoallergenic tweezers that pull the hairs from the root. Compared to other models, 21 tweezers isn’t much, although it still does a pretty good job at removing hair, considering it’s so cheap. However sometimes it takes a few passes to remove all the hair.

Another great feature of this device is the fact that you can remove the head and wash it under water. This is great for ensuring that your machine is clean and ready to use the next time you need it.

There are a few downsides to the epilator, for example this model doesn’t come with any extra caps for using on sensitive areas like the bikini area or face. So if you are looking for an epilator that you can use on the whole body, you might want to skip this model. But if you’re looking for a basic epilator that removes hair cleanly with minimal fuss, this epilator is great choice.

Emjoi AP-18 Emagine – The Fastest Epilator

The fastest epilator – Emjoi AP-18 Emagine

Emjoi AP-18 Emagine has a reputation for being the fastest epilator around. Boasting a huge 72 tweezers, it can remove more hair in a single pass, giving you more time to get on with your day.

The AP-18 has the most tweezers of any epilator on the market, so if you’re looking for a device to help you save time on your hair removal routine then this model might just be what you’ve been looking for.

This Emjoi Emagine fits nicely in the hand, plus being a corded epilator means that it will never run out of power. This model is one of the only epilators with dual opposed heads, which means that it is able to cover larger areas in less time.

The middle lifting fingers in between help to lift any short or flat lying hairs and guiding them into the barrels. Another advantage of the dual rotating heads is that they help to stretch out the skin, which provides a more comfortable epilating experience. The results are beautiful, hair free skin that will last for up to four weeks.

The Emjoi Emagine is suitable for use on all areas of the body, although it performs best on larger areas like the legs or arms. One of the downsides to this epilator is that it doesn’t come with any additional caps, which makes it harder to maneuver in smaller areas.

Cleaning is made easy with the Emjoi Emagine, it’s as simple as removing the head and washing under soapy warm water. This model is also the first epilator to use Silver Ion Technology, which helps to fight against bacterial infections.

Overall, the Emjoi Emagine is a top rated epilator that can remove hair fast, with fewer passes over the skin. If you are looking for a device that can speed up your beauty routine, I highly recommend this epilator.

Panasonic ES-ED90-P – A Good All Rounder

A good all rounder – Panasonic ES-ED90-P

The Panasonic ES-ED90-P is an excellent all rounder that performs well in both wet and dry conditions. This model is very easy to use and comes with all of the features you’d expect from a great epilator and more!

As someone who has used a cheap generic epilator before, I can tell you that this model is worth every penny. It comes with 48 tweezers that remove hair quickly and easily from the root, giving you up to a month of beautiful smooth skin.

Its cordless, waterproof design means that you can use it anywhere, even in the bath or shower. Simply add some shaving cream to the epilator head and you’re ready to go.

The battery takes just one hour to charge, giving you up to 30 minutes of use. It also comes with a built in light to help you see what you’re doing.

This epilator can be used on legs, arms and the bikini area. It comes with five attachments including a smaller epilator head, beginners cap, shaver head, bikini comb and a pedicure buffer.

The main epilator head is great for using on legs and arms while the smaller head is better for delicate areas like underarms and the bikini area. The Panasonic does lose a few points because it can’t be used on the face. If you are looking for an epilator for face, I recommend checking out my top pick the Braun Silk-epil 9.

The shaver head is great for quick touch ups and for those days when you don’t feel like epilating. Another great addition is the pedicure buffer which is bound to leave your feet feeling silky smooth.

If you ask me, you really can’t go wrong with the Panasonic ES-ED90-P. It has plenty of great features that will suit beginners and experienced users alike.
