Before I found out about the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01CT6APZ2″ locale=”US” tag=”gorg08-20″ localize=”y”]SmoothSkin Gold[/easyazon_link], I always wondered if there was a better way to remove unwanted hair than constantly shaving.
Hair removal can be so time-consuming and don’t get me started on ingrown hairs!
I always knew that there had to be a way to get that hair free feeling for longer and SmoothSkin delivers it all in one neat little package.

How does it work?
The SmoothSkin Gold by iPulse is regarded as one of the fastest and most powerful Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) devices on the market.
It works by breaking down the cycle of hair growth by applying gentle flashes of light that are absorbed by the melanin present in the hair shaft.
The absorbed light is then converted into heat, which disables the hair follicle and prevents it from growing back.
How long will it take to see results?
The results really do speak for themselves, with many people reporting a noticeable reduction in hair growth after only three weeks.
SmoothSkin Gold recommends following their 12-week treatment program, which involves shaving the hair first, then treating the desired area once a week for 12 weeks. After the initial 12 weeks, you can follow up with monthly maintenance treatments as required and zap any stray hairs that remain.
Who is it suitable for?
The SmoothSkin Gold is a versatile unit that can be used on both body and face, without the need for gels or safety glasses. It works best for people with light to medium skin tones and dark hair. Like most other Intense Pulse Light or Laser treatments, it is not suitable for people with red, grey or white hair, as there is not enough melanin present in the hair shaft to absorb the light.
The SmoothSkin Gold is a very powerful device, but at the same time, it also has a number of features to ensure that it’s safe and easy to use. This is because it is the only device on the market with an inbuilt skin sensor that automatically selects the energy level based on your skin tone. This unique detect and set feature, ensures maximum safety by measuring skin tones in 10 levels, to ensure that your treatments are being personalized to your individual skin tone.
The SmoothSkin Gold IPL comes with a gentle mode, which is great for first-time users and for use on more sensitive areas. When I first started using this device, I noticed that it does take a while to get used to the feeling of the flashes, so using the gentle mode is a great way to ease yourself into treatments.
The SmoothSkin Gold comes with two different flash modes, a Stamp mode and a Glide mode.
The Stamp mode is ideal for smaller areas where you need to be more precise, such as the face, underarms or bikini line. All you have to do is place the device on the area you want to treat and then press the activation button for each flash.
The Glide mode is perfect for use on larger areas such as the legs or arms. All you have to do is hold down the activation button and move the device across your skin in between each continuous flash.
Faster treatment times
The SmoothSkin Gold is ready to go out of the box, all you have to do is plug it in and you’re on your way to more beautiful looking skin.
The device itself looks and feels expensive, with an ergonomic design that is easy to hold and reasonably lightweight.
Getting ready for treatments is a breeze. Just shave the areas you want to treat first, making sure to only apply the device onto clean, dry skin (Hint: save the moisturizer until after your treatment).
The SmoothSkin Gold is unique in that it only takes one second in between flashes for the bulb to regenerate, which enables you to treat areas a lot quicker than other devices.
This means that you can pretty much treat your entire body in less than 20 minutes.
See the table below for a breakdown of the treatment times for each area.
|Lower Legs||8 min 45 sec|
|Upper Legs||8 min 45 sec|
|Bikini Line||53 sec|
|Upper Lip||3 sec|
The device comes with a massive 200 000 flashes giving you up to 10 years of full body treatments, so you never need to worry about buying replacement bulbs.

How does SmoothSkin Gold IPL compare?
- Looks great
- Lightweight and easy to hold
- Two treatment modes
- Unique Detect and Set feature
- Faster treatment times
- No need for gels or glasses
- Harder to use on smaller areas
- Some reviewers found that the cord was too short
After reviewing all of the options for home IPL systems, I believe that the SmoothSkin Gold is one of the best devices on the market.
It’s unique ‘Detect and Set’ feature, takes all the guesswork out of selecting the right intensity setting for your skin tone. This unique feature makes it safer and easier to use than other models on the market. SmoothSkin Gold also boasts faster treatment times than its rivals, with the bulb taking less than a second in between flashes times on the highest power setting.
Although it lacks the convenience of a cordless device, one of the advantages of having a mains powered device is that you can treat your entire body without worrying about it running out of charge. In some instances, some users found the cord length too short, but in my experiences using the device I have never found this to be a problem.
Another complaint some people had was that they found it harder to use on small, bony areas like the upper lip because you have to make sure that the contact points on each side of the window are in contact with your skin otherwise the device won’t flash. This is a safety feature that prevents the device from misfiring accidentally while in the air, and while it’s not impossible to use on these areas, it might take some time to develop a technique that works for you.
The SmoothSkin Gold is priced slightly higher than its competitors, which I think is fair, considering all the extra features and benefits you get compared to other IPL’s in the market. The old adage of ‘you get what you pay for’ definitely applies here, especially if you compare it to the costs of going to a laser clinic, where treatments can run into the thousands. Combine that with the convenience of being able to do treatments when you like and in the privacy of your own home, I think it is well worth the money.
